At the start of the war the 2nd Rifle Brigade battalion were in India but they soon returned to England where they joined 25 Brigade of 8th Division. The division landed in France on 6th November, 1914 and on 17th November 2nd Rifle Brigade moved into the trenches for the first time when they took over the front line at Chapigny near Laventie. There followed a period of three days in the trenches and then three days in billets at Laventie. One of their periods in the front line here started on 30th November and on the following day, 1st December, the battalion diary recorded that work continued on the communication and support trenches but makes no mention of any casualties so it is not known how Frank Humphries was killed on that day. Shell or sniper fire would have been the most likely cause.
